Gold quote basics

Which gold? Which money? Per what?

Finn, ChartQuest's turtle guide with an orange shell, jetpack, and gold compass

A gold quote needs a label. Our hypothetical gold futures example uses US dollars per troy ounce, a COMEX convention. Other gold products can use different units.

Read the quote’s labels

Find the instrument, currency and unit before reading the number.

COMEX gold futures quotation example identifies instrument, US dollars and one troy ounce.

Keep the unit over time

Each daily candle keeps the same unit: US dollars per troy ounce.

Four hypothetical gold futures daily candles labeled US dollars per troy ounce; not live quotes.

Price and amount differ

Two ounces have twice the illustrated metal value at the same quote.

Hypothetical $2,000 per troy ounce gives $2,000 for one ounce and $4,000 for two, before costs; not a contract order.

Does a higher candle mean more gold?

Show answer

No. It shows a higher quoted price per unit. The unit stays one troy ounce in this example.
